This was an experiment in running a home server. The 2.5" drives were from laptops that had been upgraded to SSD, and I did not store valuable data on these drives. The ~596GB HDD is from a machine purchased in 2011, and the ~298GB HDD is from a machine purchased in 2013. They are still in use in the second iteration of the home network, in RAID configuration, and show no signs of approaching failure. The 3.5" HDD is another harvested drive from a since-defunct computer that was mostly recycled. The data was backed up from this drive and sent along to its original owner, and then reformatted for use as NAS.
This was the first iteration of the home server. I have since built the machine back into a tower and passed it along to a deserving aspiring esports gamer nephew of mine, as the 8700K is still a useful chip. I added a GTX 970 for good measure and used a more powerful CPU cooler; the pictured cooler was chosen for silence, as the unit sat on my workbench and did not perform many strenuous tasks. On that note, however, I would schedule DVD ISO encoding to take place at night, as the home office got much colder which lended to better thermal performance.
I also wanted to get some practice with mounting computer hardware to a wood backing. I was never completely satisfied with how the power supply sat, as it was not mounted into place but just sat with its cords on once side of the board and its plug on the other.
